What Is a Seborrheic Keratosis?
A seborrheic keratosis is a common, harmless (benign) skin growth that appears as a waxy, wart-like, or “stuck-on” bump, typically brown, tan, or black, that develops with age.
Classic Seborrheic Keratosis
Well-defined, warty or velvety plaques with a characteristic “stuck-on” appearance — ranging from light tan to very dark brown, most commonly on the trunk, face, and scalp.
Irritated or Inflamed SKs
SKs can become red, itchy, or tender when rubbed by clothing or scratched — a common occurrence in Hawaii where loose clothing, sun exposure, and outdoor activity increase friction on skin growths.
Dermatosis Papulosa Nigra
A variant of seborrheic keratosis presenting as multiple small, dark papules primarily on the face and neck — more prevalent in individuals with darker skin tones, including many of Hawaii’s Asian and Pacific Islander patients.
