What Is an Atypical Nevus?
An atypical nevus (also called a dysplastic nevus) is an unusual-looking mole that doesn’t fit the standard criteria of a normal mole — and while most are benign, they carry a higher risk of developing into melanoma.
Irregular Size & Shape
Atypical nevi are often larger than a pencil eraser, with uneven or notched borders that fade into the surrounding skin rather than stopping cleanly.
Varied Coloration
Multiple shades of brown, tan, pink, or red within a single mole are a hallmark of atypical nevi and a key reason professional evaluation is important.
Elevated Melanoma Risk
Having multiple atypical moles — especially with a personal or family history of melanoma — significantly increases lifetime skin cancer risk and warrants regular dermatologic monitoring.
