It’s an easy sell: between sun exposure, aging, and the everyday wear and tear on skin, anything promising to rebuild collagen and keep skin firm sounds like exactly what most people are looking for. But before you add another scoop to your morning routine, it’s worth understanding what collagen supplements can actually do once they hit your digestive system — and what the science really says about whether they reach your skin at all.
Why We Lose the Collagen We Already Have in Our Skin

Collagen is the structural protein that keeps skin firm, plump, and elastic. Your body produces it naturally, but that production slows down with age. Chronic UV exposure breaks down existing collagen fibers and interferes with the body’s ability to make new ones, which is a major reason photoaging shows up earlier and more visibly in people who spend a lot of time outdoors.
