What Is Herpes Simplex Virus?
Herpes simplex virus (HSV) is a highly prevalent viral infection that establishes lifelong latency in nerve tissue, periodically reactivating to cause outbreaks of blisters or sores on the skin or mucous membranes.
HSV-1 (Oral Herpes)
Typically causes cold sores or fever blisters around the mouth and lips. Extremely common — most people are exposed in childhood — and can occasionally cause genital infection through oral contact.
HSV-2 (Genital Herpes)
Primarily causes recurrent outbreaks in the genital and perianal area. Transmitted through skin-to-skin contact, it can be active even without visible sores — making suppressive therapy an important management tool.

UV exposure, stress, illness, hormonal changes, and skin trauma can all trigger HSV reactivation — UV in particular is highly relevant for HSV-1 patients living in Hawaii’s intense sun environment.
