What Is a Cyst?
A cyst is a sac-like growth beneath the skin filled with fluid, keratin, or other material. Most are benign, but they can become inflamed, infected, or cause cosmetic concerns that warrant professional treatment.
Not all cysts are the same. Identifying the type is the first step toward the right treatment.
Epidermoid Cysts
Formed from outer skin cells (epidermis) and filled with keratin. The most common type — typically appearing as a firm, slow-growing bump on the face, neck, or trunk.
Sebaceous Cysts
Develop from oil glands and are filled with sebum. Often found on the scalp, face, or back, and prone to becoming inflamed or infected.
Pilar Cysts
Arise from hair follicles and contain keratinized material. Most commonly found on the scalp and tend to run in families.
Mucous Cysts
Form near joints or tendons and are filled with thick gelatinous fluid. Commonly appear on the fingers or toes, often near a nail or joint.
The staff was pleasant, the wait was short, and the diagnosis and treatment was very straightforward. Dr. Musaev has excellent knowledge and explained things well. The procedure was quick and painless. Clinic location and parking was easy. A great community resource!
